Tibetan Mastiff Yesterday and Today

To understand the nature and behavior of the Tibetan Mastiff (Do-Khyi) must first introduce his history, because the nature of the Tibetan Mastiff is an expression of his existence, for centuries. Has always served the man, was a dog guarding, watchful and distrustful of strangers. Life of his ancestors forced his individualism, independent thinking and often going their own ways.Mastif1

There are opinions stating that the Tibetan Mastiff is one of the oldest and the "cleanest" - it's mean untainted hybridization and admixture of blood - breeds of dogs living today. Another view says that the Tibetan Mastiff derive other varieties mastiffs that ever existed, whether they live now - the ancestors of the Tibetan Mastiff, dogs were the same that existed in Asia in remote antiquity, and which Alexander the Great came down to Macedonia from their trips to the war India. They could have even long time before Alexander the Macedonian wander away from Tibet, together with migrant tribes and move by India to Mesopotamia, Persia and Syria, and thence to ancient Greece and Europe.

Geographical, political and cultural isolation of Tibet made the race for hundreds of years has remained faithful to the original model. Difficult and sometimes completely impossible access to this country meant that there was no opportunity to hide another race.

Almost complete isolation of Tibet from the rest of the world meant that there were  a very close relationship between  Tibetan Mastiffs, but the nature of puppies subjected acute selection and stayed alive only the healthiest and strongest specimens - perhaps that is why today Tibeatn Mastiffs belongs to one of the healthiest races. But as in any breed there are some diseases and so among the breed can be seen cases of hip dysplasia, epilepsy, hypothyroidism - nowadays such a "Mother Nature" should be very reasonable breeder who will skillfully chose individuals for mating.

Females of Tibetan Mastiff to be in heat once a year - during the autumn or early winter - it is probably connected with the fact that in the past time when Tibetan Mastiffs accompanied man in his movements from place to place during that period wanderers settled in one place for longer in order to survive the winter, where the day was shorter and the temperature lower. By the spring, when the walkers began their journey in difficult territorial conditions, puppies were a little rearing and had a greater chance of survival.

His individualism is probably due to the fact that in olden days, in its primary place of residence they were not ever companion of a man in today's sense, they not have to contact with him so strong as in the present - they guarded their homes - were not allowed to inside, not playing with the children as they do today. But apparently during the winter camping it is just the children fed puppies and young dogs - and it is possible that this is what now makes Tibetan Mastiffs in relation to children are sensitive, caring, know when to withdraw, to not do harm to the child.

Constant tribes travel, movement from one place to another in search of a better life, probably caused that the Tibetan Mastiffs have the huge sense of freedom - for this days they feel the need to explore, for this reason their lawless "escape".

Country of Origin - Tibet, which for centuries regarded as the land of spirituality, Buddhism, meditation somehow influenced the behavior of the Tibetan Mastiff, which brings me just so calm, mystery, meditation. Sometimes it can be observed as Tibetan Mastiff submit to the observation of the environment with full meditation - it seems that he meditate.
